The size that Rome had reached made it necessary<strong> to build another port<\/strong> nearby (where the airport is today), but Ostia remained an essential administrative and storage centre for supporting more than a million Romans.<\/p><p>With the <strong>end of the Roman Empire<\/strong>, the <strong>port was abandoned<\/strong> and, over time, silted up with the Tiber retreating about a mile away. The mud that covered Ostia protected it from the ravages of time and from medieval peasants rummaging among the stones.<\/p><h2>Ostia Beach<\/h2><p>Recently awarded by the Touring Club for <strong>the cleanliness of its sea<\/strong>, Ostia is the sea of \u200b\u200bthe Romans. It offers a wide variety of <strong>beaches <\/strong>and restaurants.
